I have had trouble with that, too. The most effective way, I've found, is to run as fast as you can and throw stink pellets and balloons whenever you see a prefect. That distracts them momentarily, so you can run off to the portrait. Easy.
A 2:
Go to Fred and Gorge's shop and buy all the stink pellets you can. When you walk past a prefect throw them on the ground and run!
